Arda, the manufacturing AI startup co-founded by former OpenAI research chief Bob McGrew, has raised $230 million at a $1.5 billion valuation. Why it matters: the money is a bet that the bottleneck in American manufacturing is not robots, but how slowly factories adapt when a design changes.

What happened
Arda told CNBC in an exclusive interview published Tuesday, October 20, that it has raised $230 million at a $1.5 billion valuation. The round was led by Altimeter Capital, Accel and Khosla Ventures.
McGrew, who was OpenAI’s chief research officer from 2017 to 2024 and previously Palantir’s product and engineering lead for over a decade, has been building Arda quietly until this week. Its other co-founders include Augustus Odena, Alex Mark and Jakob Frick.
What Arda builds
Arda makes AI software to help automate manufacturing. McGrew described it to CNBC as a user interface and an agent that does for manufacturing engineers what Claude or Cursor does for programmers.
The problem it targets is changeover. When a design changes, a human worker can be retrained in a day, McGrew said, but changing the automation to reflect the new design can take three to six months. Arda says its product lets manufacturing engineers build assembly lines much faster, using a combination of its own proprietary models, open-source models and frontier models.
Arda’s models have already been deployed with military technology company Anduril, according to CNBC. Robotics is next on the product roadmap.
Why it matters
This is a different kind of AI bet. Instead of selling chatbots to offices, Arda is selling adaptability to factories — the place where frequent design changes have historically favored large, quickly retrainable workforces overseas. If software can cut line-change time from months toward days, more production becomes plausible in the United States. That is the pitch Altimeter’s Apoorv Agrawal made to CNBC, pointing to a $16 trillion global manufacturing industry, $3 trillion of it in the U.S. The valuation is steep for a company just emerging from stealth, so the test is whether Anduril-style deployments spread to ordinary factories.
