TL;DR: These two tools barely compete anymore. Writesonic has rebuilt itself into an AI search visibility platform for marketing teams, starting at $99 a month, with an article writer included as one feature among many. Rytr is still a simple, cheap writing assistant — free forever at low volume, and $9 a month for unlimited characters. If you just need words written, Rytr wins on price by a mile. If you need to track and improve how your brand shows up in ChatGPT and Google AI answers, that is now Writesonic’s actual job.
Bottom line: Rytr for everyday writing on a budget; Writesonic only if AI search visibility is the problem you are paying to solve.

What Writesonic became — and what it costs
Anyone who remembers Writesonic as a $19 AI writer is working from an old map. Its current pricing page sells an “AI Search Visibility Platform”: brand tracking across AI answer engines, citation gap analysis, site audits for AI search, an Action Center of prioritized fixes, and AI agents for content and outreach. The article writer still exists — the Starter plan includes 15 articles a month from its SEO & Content AI Agent — but it is one line item in a much bigger, pricier product. Our Writesonic review predates parts of this pivot, so check the current pricing page before relying on older coverage anywhere, including ours.
What the pricing page doesn’t make obvious
Writesonic’s own FAQ gives away the real shape of the entry plan. Starter tracks only three AI platforms — ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. Tracking all nine platforms, including Claude, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, and Grok, is Enterprise-only. Starter also includes just one user and one project, with only 10 audits a month at 100 pages per audit. A small team that wants broad AI-search coverage will outgrow the $99 tier quickly, which is exactly the kind of detail the headline price hides.
What Rytr costs now
Rytr’s pricing page, checked today, lists four plans: Free ($0, 10,000 characters a month), Lite ($9/mo), Personal ($19/mo), and Pro ($49/mo), with yearly billing saving 20%. The detail most older comparisons miss is what the steps actually buy. Rytr’s own pricing Q&A says Lite includes everything in Free and removes the monthly character limit — that is all it adds. The jump to Personal and Pro buys connected sources, active relationships, Engage actions, and person research runs (Pro: 1,000 relationships, 2,000 Engage actions, 50 research runs, plus custom use cases), reflecting Rytr’s expansion into follow-up and relationship work alongside its 40+ writing templates. For pure writing, Lite is the whole story; the higher tiers are not better writing plans. We go deeper in our Rytr review, and our Jasper vs Rytr comparison covers where Rytr sits against premium writers.
Which should you pick?
Pick Rytr if you write emails, posts, ads, and short content and want the cheapest unlimited plan that works: $9 a month, or free if 10,000 characters a month covers you.
Pick Writesonic if you are a marketing team whose real question is “why isn’t our brand in AI answers, and what do we fix first?” — and budget for at least the $99 Starter tier, knowing full nine-platform tracking means Enterprise pricing.
Pick neither if you want a mid-priced, SEO-first long-form writer — both tools have walked away from that middle ground, one upmarket and one sideways.
Frequently asked questions
Is Writesonic still an AI writer?
Partly. It still includes an AI article writer (15 articles a month on Starter), but the product is now sold as an AI search visibility platform starting at $99 a month.
Is Rytr really free?
Yes. The Free plan is free forever with 10,000 characters a month and no credit card. Unlimited characters start on Lite at $9 a month.
Why is Writesonic so much more expensive than Rytr?
They sell different things now: Writesonic sells AI-search tracking, audits, and agent workflows for marketing teams; Rytr sells an individual writing assistant.
Which is better for blog articles?
For volume on a budget, Rytr’s unlimited characters win. For articles built specifically to earn citations in AI answers, Writesonic’s platform is designed for that job — at platform prices.
