Oxide Raises $445 Million for On-Prem AI Clouds — While Already Profitable

October 10, 2026

The bottom line: Oxide Computer Company has raised a $445 million Series D led by Eclipse to scale manufacturing of its rack-scale on-premises cloud systems — and, unusually for a hardware startup at this stage, says it turned profitable earlier this year.

What happened

Oxide announced the round on October 9. Existing investors US Innovative Technology Fund, Riot Ventures, and Jane Street returned; new investors Atreides Management and AMD Ventures joined. Reports put the company’s total funding at roughly $835 million, following earlier rounds including a $100 million Series B in July 2025 and a $200 million Series C in February 2026.

The part that stands out: Oxide says it reached profitability earlier in 2026, and has scaled manufacturing capacity roughly 20 times in the past twelve months. Demand still outruns what it can build. As co-founder and CEO Steve Tuck put it, “The accelerating pace of on-prem cloud computing projects has required us to scale manufacturing capacity by 20x over the past 12 months, and yet demand still exceeds supply.”

What Oxide actually builds

The company’s product is the Oxide Cloud Computer — a rack-scale system that combines purpose-built hardware with open-source software, integrating compute, storage, networking, and management into a single system enterprises own and operate inside their own data centers.

The pitch is straightforward: hyperscale-style cloud automation and agility while keeping direct control over security, performance, data, and computing costs. Customers include organizations in financial services, government, national laboratories, and aerospace.

Why it matters

Oxide’s thesis is that agentic AI is the catalyst. As AI shifts from generating answers to executing work, workloads need more compute, memory, networking, and data infrastructure — and some enterprises would rather own that infrastructure than rent it. Eclipse partner Seth Winterroth, who led the round for the firm, says “the next infrastructure bottleneck is already taking shape” and that demand for CPU-based systems is “accelerating dramatically” as AI does more real work.

Our take, “everything AI, tested” style: profitability is the real headline here, not the headline number. Hardware startups that raise at this scale are usually still burning cash; Oxide says it’s buying components and expanding capacity to serve an order backlog — i.e., this money is working capital to fulfill demand, not a rescue round. The agentic-AI angle is plausible but worth watching: whether enterprises keep buying dedicated on-prem racks as agents evolve will be the test of this round.

FAQ

Why does Oxide need $445 million if it’s already profitable?

Hardware is cash-intensive upfront: the company has to pay for components and manufacturing long before customers pay for delivered systems. This funding is working capital to secure parts, expand production, and serve additional customers.

Why did AMD Ventures invest?

AMD Ventures is joining as a strategic investor, deepening an existing technical relationship between the two companies across hardware and software development.

Who else backed the round?

Eclipse led the Series D. Existing backers US Innovative Technology Fund, Riot Ventures, and Jane Street participated, and Atreides Management joined as a new investor alongside AMD Ventures.

Who buys Oxide’s systems?

Organizations in financial services, government, national laboratories, and aerospace — sectors where control over security, performance, and data matters most.
