TL;DR: These tools do opposite jobs. Muse is Meta’s personal AI agent — it browses, fills forms, drafts and sends email with your approval, books, and keeps working in the background on its own secure cloud computer. NotebookLM (now also called Gemini Notebook) does none of that: it only answers from sources you upload, with citations, plus audio and video overviews. Need tasks done → Muse. Need trustworthy answers from your documents → NotebookLM.

When Muse is the right tool
Ask Muse to compare suppliers, book a table, chase an invoice, or research options and draft the email — then approve the sensitive step. It runs on a persistent Muse Secure VM, a separate cloud computer with its own browser that you can watch and take over, and a Sentinel layer reviews what can leave the machine. Credentials and card details sit in a separate store Muse can use but not read, and checkouts use Link by Stripe one-time card numbers. That architecture matters because an agent that can spend money needs guardrails, not just a chat window.
When NotebookLM is the right tool
NotebookLM’s refusal to improvise is the point. Upload a course pack, contracts, interview transcripts, or research papers, and every answer is grounded in those sources with citations you can check. Audio Overviews turn dense material into a listenable summary, and Deep Research and slide decks build on the same notebook. It will not book anything, email anyone, or answer well about topics you did not feed it — and the free tier is generous enough that most students and researchers should start there before paying for Google AI Pro.
Which should you pick?
Pick Muse if: your bottleneck is doing — errands, bookings, inbox and calendar work, multi-step web tasks you would rather delegate and approve.
Pick NotebookLM if: your bottleneck is knowing — understanding a defined set of documents accurately, studying, or producing cited research you can defend.
Use both if: research in NotebookLM, then hand Muse the follow-up tasks (booking the interview, drafting the outreach) once you trust the findings.
