TL;DR: ChatGPT is the better standalone AI assistant — a bigger toolbox with custom GPTs, Deep Research, Codex, image generation and voice, from $8/month for Go and $20/month for Plus. Microsoft Copilot is the better buy only if your work already lives in Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams, because its paid power is Copilot inside those apps. Same $20 headline price, completely different product.
Bottom line: Live in Microsoft 365 all day — Copilot. Want one assistant for everything else — ChatGPT.

Why do people confuse these two?
Because Copilot runs on OpenAI models under the hood, the chat answers feel similar. The difference is context. Paid Microsoft 365 Copilot reads across your documents, spreadsheets, email and meetings — it can draft in Word from your files, summarize an Outlook thread, or build a deck from a document. ChatGPT cannot see your Microsoft 365 data unless you connect it. The shorthand that holds up: ChatGPT answers questions; Copilot understands your work — but only your Microsoft work.
Watch out for the free-tier trap: seeing Copilot inside Word or Excel does not mean you have the licensed version. Since April 2026 unlicensed users get Copilot Chat in the Office apps at a limited tier, without the cross-app reasoning that makes the paid version save real time.
What does ChatGPT do that Copilot does not?
Almost everything outside Office. Plus at $20 a month includes the newest reasoning models, Deep Research, Codex for coding, Projects, scheduled tasks, memory, advanced voice, image generation, and the custom GPT ecosystem — thousands of purpose-built assistants you can use or copy, plus the ability to build your own in minutes. Copilot has no real equivalent for individuals; its customization story, Copilot Studio, is aimed at businesses building internal agents.
ChatGPT’s pricing ladder is also more flexible: free is genuinely usable, Go at about $8 covers light paid use, Plus is the sweet spot, and Pro tiers at $100, $200 and $500 serve heavy users. Copilot’s ladder only makes sense bundled with Office — which is either a bargain (you needed Office anyway) or dead weight (you did not).
What does the business pricing really cost?
Compare totals, not headlines. Microsoft 365 Copilot at $30 per user per month for enterprise — or $21 for the Business tier — sits on top of a Microsoft 365 subscription you must already have, so the true combined cost is higher than the add-on price. ChatGPT Business at $20 per user billed annually is a single line item. For a Microsoft shop, Copilot’s premium buys AI inside the tools staff already open every morning, which is why it still wins most enterprise bake-offs.
Which should you pick?
Pick Copilot if your day is Word documents, Excel models, Outlook triage and Teams meetings, or your employer already runs Microsoft 365. Pick ChatGPT if you want one assistant for writing, research, coding, images and side projects, or you do not use Office. Paying for both only makes sense if Office work and general AI work are both daily, heavy jobs.
Frequently asked questions
Is Microsoft Copilot free?
Yes — Copilot Chat is free, and a limited Copilot tier now appears inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Full cross-app Copilot needs a paid Microsoft 365 plan with Copilot included or added on.
Is Copilot Pro still available?
No. The standalone $20/month Copilot Pro plan is no longer sold; its features moved into Microsoft 365 Premium at $19.99/month.
Which is better for coding?
ChatGPT — Plus includes Codex and stronger general coding help. Copilot the assistant is not GitHub Copilot, which is a separate coding product.
Can ChatGPT work inside Word and Excel?
Not natively the way Copilot does. You can paste content back and forth or use add-ins, but the in-app, file-aware experience is Copilot’s home turf.
