Bottom line: Knowt is an AI study platform positioned as a free alternative to Quizlet — and its Basic plan really is free where it counts: unlimited flashcards and notes, plus free study modes including Learn, Practice Test, Match, and Spaced Repetition. The catch is AI: Basic includes AI features with monthly limits, while unlimited AI summaries and the full Kai tutor experience sit on the paid Ultra plan. For most students making their own decks, Basic is enough.
What is Knowt?
Knowt turns study material — notes, PDFs, slides, and lectures — into flashcards, quizzes, and summaries, then lets you study them with active-recall modes. It also lets you browse millions of community-created notes and flashcard sets and import sets from Quizlet. This review is based on Knowt’s published plan descriptions and help-center information, checked October 2026 — not hands-on testing.
What is actually free on Knowt?
Knowt lists its Basic plan as Free. Based on Knowt’s plan and help-center pages, here is the split:
| Feature | Basic (Free) | Ultra (Paid) |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $0 | Paid subscription |
| Flashcards and notes | Unlimited creation | Unlimited creation |
| Study modes | Learn, Practice Test, Match, Flashcards, Spaced Repetition included | Included |
| Community library | Browse millions of notes and flashcards | Included |
| Quizlet import | Included | Included |
| AI features | Included with monthly limits that reset each month | Unlimited AI summaries and expanded AI tools |
| Kai AI tutor chats | Limited | Unlimited chats with Kai |
| AP mock exams and auto-graded assessments | Limited access | Included / unlimited |
| Ads | Ad-supported | Ad-free |
The important distinction: making and studying your own material is not metered on Basic. What is metered is AI generation — turning long documents and lectures into summaries and cards at volume.
Pros and cons of Knowt’s free plan
Pros
- Unlimited flashcards and notes at $0 — no deck-count cap to plan around.
- Full core study modes are free, including spaced repetition, not just basic flip-through flashcards.
- Quizlet import lowers the switching cost if you already have decks elsewhere.
- A large community library means you can often start from someone else’s set instead of building from scratch.
Cons
- AI usage on Basic is capped monthly; heavy PDF and lecture summarizers will hit the limit.
- The free plan is ad-supported.
- Unlimited Kai tutoring, AP mock exams, and auto-graded assessments require Ultra.
- Ultra pricing varies by platform and promotion, so check your own account before subscribing.
Who is Knowt’s free plan best for?
Knowt Basic is best for high-school and college students who mainly need flashcards, notes, and proven study modes without paying — especially Quizlet users curious about a free alternative that imports their existing sets. Teachers can also use the free tier for class material, though Knowt notes teachers get only limited access to Ultra features each month on the free side. Students who want an AI to summarize every lecture and PDF, all month long, are the ones who will feel the push toward Ultra.
