Verdict up front: If you need a polished deck fast and you start from an idea or an outline, Gamma is the quicker tool — it builds the whole presentation for you. If presentations are only one of many things you design — social posts, docs, videos, print — Canva is the better buy, because one subscription covers all of it. Gamma Plus costs $9 per seat per month billed annually; Canva Pro costs $18 a month for one person.
Bottom line: Pick Gamma for AI-generated decks, docs and simple sites. Pick Canva when you need a full design studio with a huge template and stock library.

What the pricing pages don’t make obvious
Two details decide this comparison, and both are easy to miss. First, Gamma’s 400 free credits are a one-time grant at signup — Gamma’s own help documentation says they do not refresh. At roughly 40 credits for a generated deck, that is about ten presentations, ever, not ten a month. Paid Gamma plans refill monthly (1,000 credits on Plus, 4,000 on Pro) and unused paid credits roll over up to twice the monthly allowance.
Second, Canva Teams no longer exists for new buyers. Canva’s pricing FAQ says Teams is closed to new sign-ups; the team plan you can actually buy is Canva Business at $25 per person per month. Guides still quoting a cheap flat Teams price are describing a plan you cannot purchase. Canva Pro is also strictly a one-person plan — a second person means Business seats.
How Gamma works: the AI builds the deck
Gamma starts from your words. Paste an outline, a document, or a one-line prompt and it generates a card-based presentation, document, webpage or social post with layout and images handled for you. The free plan includes importing PDF and PPTX files and exporting to PDF, PPTX, PNG and Google Slides. Plus raises the limit to 100 slides per prompt, removes Gamma branding and unlocks advanced AI image models. Pro adds premium image models, custom branding, detailed analytics and up to 10 custom domains for published sites.
The trade-off is control. You are steering a generator, not placing every element yourself, and heavy AI users can burn through monthly credits on image-heavy decks. How Canva works: you design, AI assists
Canva is a full design studio that happens to have strong AI. You start from a template or a blank canvas and edit directly, with Magic Studio tools — background removal, Magic Resize, text-to-image and AI writing — assisting inside the editor. Presentations are one format among many: social graphics, videos, documents, whiteboards and print products all live in the same account, backed by a template and stock library Gamma cannot match.
That breadth is why Canva Pro can be the cheaper tool overall: it replaces several single-purpose subscriptions. The downside for deck-only users is speed — you are still assembling slides yourself. We compared Canva’s design strengths in Canva vs Adobe Express and in our full Canva review.
Which should you pick?
Pick Gamma if you make presentations, docs or simple sites every week, you start from text, and you want a finished-looking result in minutes. Plus at $9 per seat per month billed annually is the cheapest credible way to do that without branding on your decks.
Pick Canva if you design many kinds of content, need templates and stock assets, or publish the same brand everywhere. Pro at $18 a month for one person — or Business at $25 per person for a team — buys the whole studio, not just slides.
Frequently asked questions
Is Gamma really free?
Gamma has a free plan, but its 400 AI credits are given once and do not refresh. It is best treated as a generous trial: enough for roughly ten generated decks, after which you need Plus.
Can Canva generate a whole presentation from a prompt?
Canva’s AI can draft pages inside its editor, but the workflow is still template-and-edit based. Gamma’s prompt-to-deck generation is its core product, and it is faster for a first draft.
What happened to Canva Teams?
Canva closed Teams to new sign-ups. New teams buy Canva Business at $25 per person per month, or $250 per person per year. Existing Teams customers keep their old plan unless they switch or cancel.
Does Gamma export to PowerPoint?
Yes. Gamma exports to PPTX, PDF, PNG and Google Slides on every plan, including Free. Canva also exports presentations to PPTX and PDF.
