ADNOC Signs Multi-Year Deal With OpenAI and G42 to Deploy Frontier AI Across Its Energy Business

ADNOC, Abu Dhabi’s state energy company, signed a multi-year partnership with OpenAI and G42 on November 2, 2026, to deploy frontier AI across its operations — making it, by its own account, the first energy company to deploy OpenAI Frontier, OpenAI’s platform for coordinating AI agents across complex business operations. Why it matters: this is not a chatbot pilot. The plan connects subsurface, operational, capital and commercial decisions that are normally made one after another into a single decision process, with human experts keeping oversight of consequential calls.

Abu Dhabi — November 2, 2026

What was signed at ADIPEC?

The agreement was signed at ADIPEC, the UAE’s biggest energy conference, and witnessed by Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. Under the deal, the partners will jointly develop a bespoke decision-intelligence capability that combines OpenAI’s latest frontier models with ADNOC’s proprietary industrial data and expertise. The systems will run on G42’s sovereign AI infrastructure inside the UAE, and ADNOC says its proprietary data and critical infrastructure stay under its own oversight and protection.

What are the first two applications?

The first application targets field master planning. Today, subsurface, facilities and economic studies for an oil field are usually done in sequence. Building on ENERGYai, ADNOC’s existing subsurface platform, OpenAI’s reasoning models will pull together decades of data across thousands of wells, multiple stacked reservoirs and hundreds of surface facilities, alongside capital, cost and commercial considerations. ADNOC says full-field plans could then be prepared and optimized in hours rather than months, with the whole field optimized at once instead of piece by piece.

The second application connects the value chain — production, processing, refining, logistics, sales and trading — with interconnected AI agents that forecast crude supply, demand, prices and margins, so decision-makers can see the operational and commercial consequences of a choice before they make it.

What else is in the partnership?

The deal also covers cybersecurity work through Daybreak Blue, an OpenAI initiative that helps security teams find vulnerabilities and protect critical energy infrastructure. The partners will co-develop further AI solutions and train ADNOC’s workforce to use them. That builds on a large existing base: ADNOC says it has already rolled out ChatGPT Enterprise to more than 40,000 employees — which it describes as the largest enterprise ChatGPT deployment in the Middle East and North Africa, with adoption above 97% — and has more than 200 AI applications and 70 robotics use cases deployed or in development. No financial value or deployment timetable for the new applications was disclosed.

Why it matters

For Tested Intelligence readers, the signal here is where frontier AI is actually landing: not in demos, but inside a national oil company’s planning process, on sovereign infrastructure, with the vendor’s CEO in the room. Sam Altman attended ADIPEC and met the Crown Prince during the visit. Deals like this are the enterprise end of the AI market — agents coordinating real decisions, with a human sign-off where it counts. The honest caveat is that everything beyond the signing itself is a plan: no money figure, no dates, and no independent results yet. Everything AI, tested — we will judge this one on what ships, not on the ceremony.
