CloudNC CAM Assist Review 2026: AI Toolpaths Inside the CAM You Already Run
Updated October 16, 2026 – Tested Intelligence
Quick verdict: CAM Assist is an AI plug-in from London-based CloudNC that lives inside your existing CAM package and generates a first-pass machining strategy – tools, operations and toolpaths – from a 3D model. It does not replace your CAM seat or your judgment; it takes the blank-page work off the programmer. CloudNC claims programming time savings of up to 80 percent, and trade-press reporting is cautiously positive.
What it is
CloudNC builds AI software for CNC machining, and CAM Assist is the product a working shop can actually buy. Instead of asking you to switch CAM systems, it installs inside your existing CAM package and works on your part model there. CloudNC documents compatibility with Autodesk Fusion, Mastercam (2025 onward), GibbsCAM, SolidCAM and Siemens NX. Point it at a 3D model and it proposes how to machine the part: which tools, in what order, with toolpaths for 3-axis and 3+2-axis milling.
The idea is to attack the real bottleneck in most shops: programming hours. Much of a senior programmer’s day goes to routine decisions on straightforward parts. CAM Assist drafts those decisions in minutes so the programmer starts from a working strategy instead of an empty tree, then edits, verifies and posts as usual.
Modern Machine Shop has covered the product since its early-2024 US launch, including a shop-floor account from Wheeler Precision in Hydro, Washington, where a complex impeller job’s programming time dropped from weeks to two days. Treat that as a vendor-cited example rather than a guarantee – but MMS also sent a writer to run the software and reported real savings alongside real supervision.
Key features
- Runs inside your existing CAM – CloudNC documents Fusion, Mastercam, GibbsCAM, SolidCAM and Siemens NX versions
- AI generates machining strategies: operations, tool selection and toolpaths from the 3D model
- Handles 3-axis and 3+2-axis milling parts (not full simultaneous 5-axis)
- Uses tools from your own library, with feeds and speeds you constrain
- Cycle Time Estimator gives a runtime estimate before you commit
- Programmer stays in control: output is reviewed and edited before posting
Pricing
CloudNC does not publish pricing. Its own FAQ says CAM Assist pricing is bespoke to each shop’s needs, sold per seat and based on the number of users and the level of support required – you get a figure by booking a demo. Budget accordingly: there is no public rate card to plan against.
Who it’s for
Shops with a programming backlog and Fusion or Mastercam already on the desk – especially job shops turning around steady prismatic milling work. If your programmers spend their days on repeatable 3-axis and 3+2 work, CAM Assist is aimed squarely at that queue. It also suits shops that cannot hire another senior programmer.
Who should skip it
Turning shops: CAM Assist is milling-only, with no lathe programming story, and full 5-axis simultaneous work is outside its lane. Shops on unsupported CAM platforms would have to switch systems, which defeats the point. And on one-off, fixturing-weird prototypes, the draft may need so much rework that a good programmer starting fresh is just as fast.
Pros
- Works inside the CAM you already own and know
- Drafts a complete strategy, not just a single toolpath
- Trade press shop testing backs meaningful programming time savings
- Keeps the programmer in the loop – output is editable, not a black box post
Cons
- Pricing is not published on CloudNC’s own site; you buy through CAM marketplaces or sales
- Milling only – no turning support
- No full simultaneous 5-axis strategies
- Modern Machine Shop’s hands-on account notes it still requires babysitting and cleanup
FAQ
Does CAM Assist replace my CAM software?
No. It is a plug-in that runs inside your existing CAM package – CloudNC documents versions for Autodesk Fusion, Mastercam, GibbsCAM, SolidCAM and Siemens NX. You still need your CAM seat, your posts and your normal verification steps.
Can it program a part start to finish without me?
That is not how it is sold or how shops report using it. It generates a strong first draft; an experienced programmer reviews, adjusts and posts. Expect supervision, especially on tight-tolerance or awkward parts.
How much does CAM Assist cost?
CloudNC does not publish pricing on its site; its FAQ says pricing is bespoke per shop, sold per seat based on users and support level, and quoted after a demo.
Bottom line
CAM Assist is one of the clearest real products in AI machining: a plug-in that drafts milling programs inside Fusion or Mastercam so your programmers start at 70 percent instead of zero. It will not run your 5-axis work or your lathes, and you will still check every path. For a shop whose constraint is programming hours on prismatic parts, that is a trade worth pricing out.
