DigitalOcean Launches Cuttlefish, an iPhone App for Supervising AI Agents, With Box as Launch Partner

DigitalOcean has launched Cuttlefish, a native iPhone app that lets you watch, approve and steer AI agent runs from your phone, with Box as its launch partner. Why it matters: as agents do longer stretches of work unsupervised, the bottleneck becomes human oversight — and DigitalOcean is betting that oversight should happen from anywhere, not from a desk.

What happened

At BoxWorks on November 5, DigitalOcean announced a collaboration with Box and launched Cuttlefish, an iPhone app for its Managed Agents service. Managed Agents is in public preview, and Cuttlefish is available today on the App Store for Managed Agents customers.

Inside the app, users follow live agent sessions as replies, reasoning and tool calls stream in, with notifications when a run needs approval, finishes or fails. They can approve or deny individual tool calls — with the full command, file path or diff shown before deciding — and redirect, pause or stop a run. Cuttlefish works with whichever agent harness a team runs on Managed Agents, including Claude Code, Codex CLI, OpenCode, OpenHands, Hermes, LangGraph and CrewAI. Sessions run in DigitalOcean MicroVMs that persist independently of any device, and billing follows active CPU use, so time an agent spends waiting costs little.

The Box piece: agents working on real company content

The Box collaboration adds Box Mount, which syncs a Box folder into every Managed Agents session. The agent works on plain files — contracts, reports, specs — and its edits, including deletions, sync back to Box, while changes made in Box appear in the workspace. Each person syncs with their own Box account, so Box’s existing permissions, version history and audit trail apply to everything the agent touches. Box Mount is in private preview.

DigitalOcean pitches the combination at domain-specific work across legal, finance, engineering and support teams: agents that operate on a company’s real content, run on DigitalOcean, and stay under a named human’s control, with that human approving key steps from wherever they are.

Why it matters

Every cloud provider is racing to host AI agents; far fewer are solving the supervision problem. An agent that runs for an hour and then waits half a day for someone to get back to a laptop and approve a step is not very autonomous in practice. Cuttlefish treats approval as a mobile, push-notification moment — closer to approving a payment than reviewing a pull request — while Box Mount answers the other enterprise objection, governance, by keeping permissions and audit trails attached to the content. Both pieces are still previews, and DigitalOcean is explicit that preview services are not supported for production workloads. But the shape of the product — agents working in the background, humans supervising by phone — is a credible picture of where agent operations are heading.
