AltoSum Review 2026: AI TL;DR Summaries With No API Key to Set Up
AltoSum is a WordPress plugin that writes an AI TL;DR plus key-takeaway bullets for each post — with no API key, no account and no setup, because the AI runs on the vendor’s hosted service instead of your own OpenAI or Anthropic key. The plugin is on WordPress.org (version 1.0.26, updated October 2026, no ratings yet). Free covers 10 summaries a month; Pro lifts the limit for £46.80/year including UK VAT.
What it is
AltoSum is listed on WordPress.org as “AltoSum – AI Post Summary, TL;DR & Key Takeaways,” from The Really Useful App Company. It reads a post and writes a two-to-three-sentence TL;DR with optional key-takeaway bullets, shown in a box at the top or bottom of the article if you switch on automatic insertion, or anywhere you place the [altosum] shortcode.
The defining choice is where the AI runs. Almost every rival makes you sign up with an AI provider, generate your own API key and pay per use. AltoSum runs generation on its own backend — its listing discloses Anthropic as a sub-processor — so it works on activation. Automation is off until you switch it on: a summary generated on publish waits in the editor for approval, and generation runs only once per post, so a discarded summary is not silently regenerated.
Key features
- No API key, no account, no setup. The AI runs on the vendor’s service; there is nothing to configure before the first summary.
- One-click generation in the editor. Generate from the AltoSum box, with a live counter of free summaries left this month.
- TL;DR plus key takeaways. A concise summary with optional bullet takeaways, under a heading you set.
- Placement you control. Auto-insert at the top or bottom of single posts, or use the
[altosum]shortcode. - Approval before anything shows. Publish-time summaries wait for your approval in the editor — nothing AI-written appears unseen.
Pricing
Prices are from the vendor’s own page. Free is £0 from WordPress.org: 10 summaries per month with TL;DR and takeaway bullets, auto-summarise on publish, and review-before-publishing. Pro is £46.80/year including 20% UK VAT (£39 excluding VAT), or £4.19/month including VAT (£3.49 excluding), for unlimited summaries subject to fair use. Pro is a licence key that unlocks the free plugin, covers one WordPress site (WordPress 6.0+, PHP 7.4+), renews automatically until cancelled, and carries a 14-day full-refund window.
What the pricing page doesn’t make obvious: the free allowance has already shrunk once. The current release’s changelog states plainly that “the free plan is now 10 summaries a month (it was 25)” — and older coverage and cached listings still quote 25. Ten summaries suits a weekly blog; a daily publisher is on Pro from the start, and “unlimited” there is still subject to the fair-use clause in the vendor’s terms.
Who it’s for
- Bloggers who want summaries without a developer step — no provider account, no key to paste, no per-token bill; the first summary is one click after activation.
- Publishers who insist on approving AI text — publish-time summaries wait in the editor and never appear until a person approves them.
What to watch out for
- A brand-new, unrated plugin. There are no reviews on WordPress.org yet and the install base is very small. The changelog is active and detailed, but you are an early adopter — check summaries for accuracy first.
- Your content goes to the vendor’s service. Each generation sends the post title and content to the vendor’s API, which uses Anthropic as a sub-processor. Nothing is sent until you generate, but sites with sensitive material should weigh that first.
- One site per Pro licence. At £46.80/year for a single site, multi-site publishers pay per site.
- Research-based review. Based on the vendor’s WordPress.org listing, its own AltoSum page, pricing and terms; not run on a live site ourselves.
Head-to-head: AltoSum vs WPSummarize
Against WPSummarize, reviewed in this section on October 30, the models are mirror images. WPSummarize is bring-your-own-key: free covers 50 summaries a month with your own OpenAI key, Pro $49/year for unlimited. AltoSum’s free plan is five times smaller at 10 — but needs no key, no provider account and no per-use bill, and Pro at £46.80/year is priced in line. Choose AltoSum for zero setup; WPSummarize if you already have a key and publish often.
Pros
- True zero setup: no API key, no account, working the moment the plugin is activated.
- Approval-first workflow — AI summaries never reach the site unseen, and discarded ones are not regenerated.
- Transparent data flow, disclosed in detail on its WordPress.org listing.
- Pro includes a 14-day full-refund window and can be cancelled any time to stop renewals.
Cons
- Free plan is only 10 summaries a month — cut from 25 in the current release.
- No WordPress.org reviews yet and a very small install base.
- Pro covers a single site, and “unlimited” is subject to a fair-use clause.
Frequently asked questions
Is AltoSum really free?
Yes — free from WordPress.org with 10 summaries a month. Pro at £46.80/year including VAT removes the monthly limit, subject to fair use, for one site.
Do I need an OpenAI or Anthropic API key?
No. Generation runs on the vendor’s hosted service, which uses Anthropic as a sub-processor — the trade-off is that your post title and content are sent there each time you generate.
Will a summary appear on my site without me seeing it?
No. A summary generated on publish waits in the editor, marked as waiting for approval, and is not shown until you approve it. Regenerating on a published post works the same way.
