Quick verdict
What does Novelcrafter do?
Novelcrafter combines three things fiction writers usually stitch together from separate apps: a manuscript editor organized into books, chapters and scenes; a planning layer of outlines and scene beats; and the Codex, a wiki-style story bible where you define characters, locations, factions, items, species, magic systems and anything else your world needs.
The Codex is not a passive notebook. It detects mentions of entries automatically as you write, tracks progressions — how a character, place or object changes over the course of the story — and, crucially, feeds the relevant entries into AI generations as context. Ask for a scene from a one-line beat and the model works from your established lore and previous scenes instead of inventing a second capital city.
The AI itself is bring-your-own-key (BYOK). You connect your own account with a model provider — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, hundreds of models via OpenRouter, or a local model — and pick per task: a strong model for a hard scene, a cheap one for brainstorming. On top of generation, AI features include scene summarization, automatic character extraction into the Codex, and (from the Artisan plan) a workshop chat that can interview your characters with Codex memory.
How much does Novelcrafter cost?
Pricing below is from Novelcrafter’s own pricing page, checked October 2026. Annual billing takes two months off each price shown. Every plan includes the Codex and unlimited books; the differences are AI access, review tools and collaboration.
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Scribe | $4/month | Unlimited books, series support, Codex, basic review features — no AI |
| Hobbyist | $8/month | Everything in Scribe, plus AI via bring-your-own-key |
| Artisan | $14/month | Everything in Hobbyist, plus AI chat features and advanced review features |
| Specialist | $20/month | Everything in Artisan, plus collaborative writing and team management |
There is a 21-day free trial of all features with no credit card required. The honest total-cost note: on AI plans you also pay your model provider directly for the tokens you use. That can be cheaper than a bundled tool’s credits in a light month and more expensive in a heavy drafting month — the point is that you see and control the meter.
What are Novelcrafter’s strengths?
- The Codex: a structured, auto-linking story bible shared across a whole series is the strongest continuity system in this category.
- Model freedom: BYOK means no lock-in to one lab’s model, and cheap models for cheap tasks.
- Honest, low headline pricing: $4/month buys a complete non-AI writing workspace; $8/month is where AI starts.
- Progressions: tracking how entries change over time solves a real series-writing problem most tools ignore.
- A real trial: 21 days, all features, no card — long enough to move a real project in and judge it.
What are Novelcrafter’s weaknesses?
- BYOK setup friction: you need a provider account, an API key and a funded balance before the AI does anything — non-technical writers bounce off this.
- Unpredictable total cost: subscription plus API usage means heavy drafting months do not have a fixed price.
- A learning curve: it is the most configurable tool in its class, and new users have to learn the system before it pays them back.
- No one-click generation: Novelcrafter is a workspace you drive scene by scene, not a brief-to-book generator.
- The cheapest plan has no AI: Scribe at $4/month is a writing app only — the AI story starts at $8/month plus usage.
Who is Novelcrafter for?
Fantasy, sci-fi and series fiction writers whose worlds have outgrown sticky notes and spreadsheets, and who want AI help that respects their lore instead of overwriting it. It also suits writers who already hold API keys and prefer paying providers directly. Writers who want an assistant with the AI bundled into one subscription — Sudowrite is the obvious comparison — will find the BYOK model more hassle than savings.
Frequently asked questions
Is Novelcrafter free?
No. There is a 21-day free trial with all features unlocked and no credit card required; after that, plans run from $4 to $20 per month.
Does Novelcrafter include AI in the price?
No. From the $8/month Hobbyist plan up, you bring your own API key and pay the model provider for usage on top of the subscription.
What is the Codex?
A structured story bible for characters, locations, lore and world rules. It auto-links mentions in your manuscript, tracks how entries change, and supplies context to AI generations.
Novelcrafter vs Sudowrite — what’s the difference?
Sudowrite bundles AI into its subscription with credits; Novelcrafter gives you a deeper story bible and model choice, but makes you supply and pay for the AI yourself.
Verdict
Novelcrafter is the power user’s pick in AI fiction writing: the Codex genuinely solves continuity, the pricing is low and transparent about what it excludes, and model freedom future-proofs the workspace. The BYOK requirement is both its best feature and its biggest barrier. If you write long, lore-heavy fiction, take the 21-day trial and move one real book in — that is the only way to know which side of the trade you land on.
