Notion Agents Can Now Run for More Than 24 Hours — and Auto Claims Frontier Results at 90% Lower Cost

Notion overhauled Notion AI on October 19, 2026: its rebuilt Agents can now work on a single task for more than 24 hours — up from a five-minute limit — and a new Auto model router claims frontier-level results at about 90% lower average cost. Why it matters: a five-minute agent can draft and summarize; a 24-hour agent can own a research project, a screening pipeline or a content workflow end to end, inside the workspace teams already live in.

What happened

Notion announced a sixth-generation agent harness in which Notion Agents get their own computer and browser, smarter context management, and a “Review for me” mode in which a separate model checks proposed agent actions for safety. Sessions now survive service restarts, agents condense conversations and move large tool outputs outside the context window to avoid reprocessing them, and Notion says chats load up to 50% faster on mobile. Custom Agent runs cost roughly 30% less in Notion’s testing.

Auto, BYOK and a bigger MCP

Auto is Notion’s upgraded model router: it matches each task to a model by quality, speed and cost, and changes course if it gets stuck. Across more than 20 common tasks, Notion says Auto delivered results similar to Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra at about 90% lower average cost — a vendor claim, not an independent benchmark. Users can also connect a ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Go subscription to their personal Notion Agent (initially excluding Custom Agents), and Enterprise customers can apply for a private-alpha Bring Your Own Key programme. Notion MCP — which Notion calls its fastest-growing product ever — was overhauled so outside agents can use Notion as a shared memory, with memory sync live now and skills via MCP coming soon.

The new credit system

All Notion AI usage now runs on two monthly pools per Business or Enterprise seat: 1,500 Standard credits, for tasks where Notion picks the model, and 500 Select credits, for user-chosen models and Custom Agents. Keeping the pools separate is meant to stop heavy agent runs from draining everyday AI use. Admins can buy extra credits and allocate them. The system starts today for new customers; existing customers switch on November 2. An AI Command Center — usage by person, feature and agent, spending limits and alerts — is announced as coming soon, not live yet.

Why it matters

This is the agent market maturing in public: runtime measured in days instead of minutes, routing that treats model choice as a cost decision, and metering an admin can actually audit. The 90% cost claim needs independent testing, and the Command Center that would prove spend is still “coming soon.” But if the harness holds up, Notion just made a credible case that the agent platform is the workspace you already have — not another tool to buy.
