October 3, 2026 — Cloudflare has launched a Web Search API inside AI Gateway, in open beta, giving AI agents and applications a way to search the live web and ground responses in current information.
What happened
Cloudflare announced the Web Search API on October 2 via its developer blog and changelog. The API runs through AI Gateway, so search requests appear in the same gateway logs as model inference calls and are billed to existing AI Gateway credits.
At launch there are three search providers to choose from: Ceramic.ai (the default), Exa, and Linkup. All three support Zero Data Retention for requests made through Cloudflare, and all have committed to Cloudflare’s verified bot crawling standards. Every search response must link back to the source of the crawled content.
How developers use it
There are two access paths: a standard REST endpoint or a Workers binding that Cloudflare says takes one line of code to call. Requests return a consistent shape — a title, URL, and description per result — so switching providers is a single parameter.
Cloudflare charges each provider’s list API price with no added markup: $0.25 per 1,000 requests for Ceramic.ai, $5 for Linkup, and $7 for Exa. Organizations with existing provider accounts can bring their own keys. The current limits: at most 10 results per request, and a native “Server Tools” mode where a model calls search on its own is marked coming soon — for now, developers wire search into the tool-calling loop manually.
Why it matters
Here’s the problem Cloudflare is solving, in its own words: when an agent needs a live web page today, it usually just guesses the URL and curls it — which is why web fetches sometimes come back 404. Search replaces guessing with retrieval.
The deeper value is grounding. Models are trained, then frozen; they can’t speak to recent events, changed APIs, or fast-moving news. Injecting fresh, structured web snippets into the model’s context window during inference is how you fix that. Cloudflare’s pitch: an agent building with Cloudflare developer tools would otherwise miss every product launched during Birthday Week — with web search, it can read the docs that shipped yesterday.
The subscriber’s take: pricing matters here. Model-native search tools run $10–$14 per 1,000 searches before token charges; Cloudflare’s cheapest provider is $0.25. For high-volume agent workflows, that’s the difference between grounding being a luxury and grounding being the default.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Cloudflare Web Search API?
A new open-beta API inside Cloudflare’s AI Gateway that lets AI agents and applications search the public web and inject live results into a model’s context, instead of relying on a training cutoff or guessing URLs.
Which search providers are supported?
Three at launch: Ceramic.ai (default), Exa, and Linkup. All support Zero Data Retention through Cloudflare and meet its verified bot crawling standards. You can also bring your own provider API key.
How much does it cost?
Usage draws down AI Gateway credits at each provider’s list price with no markup: $0.25 per 1,000 requests for Ceramic.ai, $5 for Linkup, $7 for Exa.
What are the limits?
A maximum of 10 results per request, and developers currently define the search function themselves — a native server-tool mode the model can call directly is coming soon.
