Meta launches “Muse” for small business — an AI assistant that does the office work

Published September 30, 2026. Meta has launched Muse for Small Business, an agentic AI assistant pitched at owners who’d rather be running their business than running their office — creating ad campaigns, analyzing financials, sorting email, tracking orders.

What it does

Muse works through a chat interface but can act on the user’s behalf: business owners name their own assistant at signup and put it to work on marketing, websites, email flows, and strategy. Meta says it won’t act without permission. Early testers — 35 small business owners invited to Meta’s LA campus in early September — report using it for everything from brand guidelines to deciding when to shift ad spend.

The bigger picture

This is Meta’s consumer-distribution play against OpenAI’s enterprise-focused Dots agents, announced at DevDay the same week. Same underlying trend — agents that do work, not just chat — aimed at opposite ends of the market.

Why it matters

Most “AI for business” tools are built for teams with IT departments. A genuinely useful assistant for a non-technical small business owner is a harder test — and arguably the more important one. We’ll be watching pricing and the permission controls closely before recommending it.
